THIS IS FAKER

ABOUT LEE “FAKER” SANG-HYEOK

Lee “Faker” Sang-hyeok was only a junior in high school when he first received an offer from a pro League of Legends (LoL) team due to his outstanding performance in solo rank. Despite his brilliant talent in the game, Faker was originally hesitant to go pro as it wasn’t a common career choice back then.

However, after receiving advice from his teacher who encouraged him to “show his skills and talents”, Faker decided to take the big leap and commit to being a pro gamer. Indeed, this turned out to be a fantastic decision, as Faker’s achievements as a professional gamer have been nothing short of legendary, winning three world championships in 2013, 2015, and 2016 respectively—a feat shared by only one other player.

Add to that his dozen or so 1st place finishes in other premier tournaments, and it’s not hard to see why Faker is widely regarded as one of the greatest League players of all time, earning nicknames such as the “Unkillable Demon King” and “Faker, Faker Playmaker”.

THE FACE BEHIND THE FAME

After turning pro, Faker quickly realized the importance of teamwork. Having only ever played solo, he had to “put in extra effort” in playing together as a team as he learnt how to “work together and get along with others”. Thanks to all the gruelling 12-hour training sessions, Faker has since formed strong bonds with his teammates and views them as his second family.

With such a highly demanding esports career, Faker had to make sacrifices especially when he was still in school. Despite his good grades, juggling his studies and training proved difficult. While he’s chosen to pursue professional gaming, Faker is keen to continue his education after retiring from esports.

Citing his “desire to win” as something that drives him to keep training and grinding after all these years of competing, Faker mentioned that he will always do whatever it takes for him and his team to “prove that they are the best”—an attitude and hunger which has shaped the legend we know today.
